Hullooos! This blog will be updated irregularly (yes, irregularly, because I am flaky like that) with snippets of life in Jakarta.
Half of the people I meet in the US or UK think Jakarta is a tiny village tucked in the jungle--think National Geographic. The other half thinks it's in Vietnam or Thailand or China. So I thought it would be nice to have a page dedicated to showing you guys what Jakarta is really like.
Jakarta is a wonderful, crazy mish-mash of fast-paced big city...
...but you may have heard that we are sinking. As with the rest of the world, the poor are the ones who suffer from lack of infrastructure and proper city planning, and it pains me to see parts of Jakarta which are suffering from the effects of pollution and flooding.
Jakarta is also home to some of the best food in the world. (Even my husband agrees, and he's English, so y'alls know he's a total snob.)
Here is a picture of my all-time favorite dessert: Martabak manis.

It's basically a pancake on steroids. Think of a pancake large enough to fill the entire pan. Now slap half a stick of butter on it, and then pile on: crushed peanuts, chocolate, sugar, cheese (yes, really, cheese, it's an amazing combo), sesame seeds, and condensed milk. I think each one has about 10,000 calories, but it is so worth it.
If any of you are coming to Jakarta, I am more than happy to share with you where and what to eat! In fact, updates on this page are most probably going to be food related, so don't come to this page if you're on a diet.
